Timeless room decor for boys can be achieved with a simple color palette, classic furniture and minimal pattern. This is a space that will grow with my son while still leaving room for updates.

We have always transitioned our kids from their cribs into a full or queen size mattress versus a toddler bed. Although they look teeny tiny in the bed to begin with, the longevity of going straight to a big bed has cut down on handling extra pieces of furniture during the toddler stage. For both kids, we started with the mattress on the floor and ultimately invested in a bed frame. My son was still a toddler when I decorated this room, but I knew that I wanted to get as close to “decorating once” as possible. Five years later we have swapped out wall art, added posters and a gaming chair and desk, but I won’t budge on changing the paint color or any major furniture!
Boys Room Design Board
Because I decorated this room when my son was little, my default wall color was light blue. I picked Clear Skies by Benjamin Moore. I wanted a mostly monochromatic color palette, so leaned into navy as the main accent color. Everything else in the space is classic without going too traditional. As my son started to form an opinion on his own style, I knew that we’d be making updates.

Timeless Furniture

The main piece of furniture in this room is the navy blue upholstered queen bed (here’s a very similar headboard). The nailheads on the headboard add a classic touch. Our kids rooms are not very big, so I picked a small wood nightstand from At Home. As I mentioned earlier, we recently added a gaming chair and a small desk on wheels to the corner of the room. At first, I thought the space was too small to add something like this. But for now, my son uses it as a quiet spot to do his homework.
Boys Bedding
This bed also has my favorite white Lands End sheets on it! I’ve mentioned this in other posts, but we have the same sheets on all beds in the house for ease of laundering and changing. The navy striped Euro shams are also from Lands End. The two standard navy shams are my Goodwill find for this room! I can’t remember where I got the gray H pillow, but it has really held up. The green quilt is a nice linen blend that I refuse to change out even after requests from my son.

Lighting and Room Decor for Boys
In each kids room, I like to have a ceiling light, a table lamp and a low light. I turn the low light on for them when they’re about to get in bed. The ceiling light in this room is a very basic semi-flush mount with a white shade. The table lamp I used is small and gold. The low light is a light up globe on my sons nightstand that is also from a thrift store. He has started to add some of his own decor touches like LED lights.
The decor that I initially put in this space is very minimal in keeping with my timeless room decor for boys theme. There’s three floating book shelves, a set of three gold mirrors above the bed and I had some animal photographs in wood frames at the foot of the bed. My son has swapped out some of these items with gaming wall art and sports posters.

Storage
I’m including this closet space as it has evolved over the last few years. When my son was small, it was easy to keep the bins and toys organized as he didn’t have as much clothes. Now that he’s older, there’s a lot happening and I would love to put a custom closet in here at some point (along with in my daughter’s room).
