Simple Fall Pumpkin Topiary Decor

Festive fall-themed pumpkin and floral Christmas tree decorations in living room.

This DIY pumpkin topiary is a simple accent that works beautifully for fall decor and Halloween. It complements classic decorating with traditional fall colors, but it can also be mixed with more colorful and richly textured pieces. Made for the fall season, this is the kind of decor you can put out early and keep through Thanksgiving. It brings in a touch of Halloween charm without relying on bright colors or stronger themed decorations. This is a stylish, easy project that is more affordable than store-bought options.

What You’ll Need

Materials

  • Foam craft cone
  • Mini faux pumpkins – mine are beaded
  • Faux greenery – any type of leaf works
  • Vase, urn, or vessel

Tools

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Before You Start

Clear a workspace on a table or counter near an outlet for the hot glue gun before you begin. This project is done in layers, with the faux greenery base first and the mini pumpkin layer added after, so you may want to take a break before the next step. It helps to work in a space where the project can stay laid out for a bit. The supplies can be found at a local craft store. I found mine at Hobby Lobby. When selecting a vase or urn, make sure the foam cone can rest on top. Vintage pots and terra cotta pots both work well.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Create the Greenery Layer

Remove the faux greenery leaves from the stems. Begin creating the greenery layer by hot gluing the leaves to the foam cone with a small dab of glue. Cover the entire surface of the cone, working randomly rather than following a set pattern. Starting at the bottom of the cone can make it easier to build the layer evenly as you work upward. Save a few greenery leaves to tuck under each pumpkin once they are in place.

Step 2: Attach the Mini Pumpkins

Attach the mini pumpkins sporadically throughout the cone using a small dot of hot glue. Too much glue will make the pumpkin slide, but too little will not hold it in place. Be careful not to cluster the pumpkins too closely together. They should feel random, but still be spaced evenly throughout the cone. Check the cone from all sides as you go to help keep the pumpkins spaced evenly.

Step 3: Add the Remaining Greenery

Add a final touch of green by tucking the tips of a few of the remaining leaves slightly under each mini pumpkin with a small dab of glue. This is the best part, since it subtly highlights each pumpkin and gives the topiary a fuller look. Tucking the leaves in at slightly different angles helps the greenery look more natural.

Step 4: Place the Topiary on the Vessel

Set the topiary on the vessel and make sure it sits securely and does not tip over.

Styling a DIY Pumpkin Topiary

This topiary is the perfect size for a mantel, console table, or dining table centerpiece. Its antique look adds a touch of character to any beautiful fall vignette. You can pair this with other popular fall decor, like a stacked pumpkin topiary, real mini pumpkins, and candles. The beautiful colors complement any decor style while adding a timeless touch.

Simple Tips to Change the Look

Simple swaps to this project can give it a different style and feel. Bright orange pumpkins would make it feel more colorful and modern, while different colors like pale cream would keep the overall look more classic. Using pumpkins of different sizes can also change the scale, depending on whether you are working with larger or smaller cones. Additional styling at the bottom, like a grapevine wreath or Spanish moss, adds detail and character. These small changes make it easy to adjust the topiary to fit your style.

A Pumpkin Topiary for Simple Fall Style

Fall is the best time of year to take on a small and simple DIY decor project to add to your collection. This DIY pumpkin topiary is a great addition to your fall decorations that can be used year after year. DIY pumpkin topiaries are as stylish as store-bought options for a fraction of the cost. With orange pumpkins layered with faux greenery, it is a great way to bring in fall style that can last from early fall through Thanksgiving. Styled next to a traditional pumpkin stack, this pumpkin topiary adds simple fall charm to your home.
