Colorful Home Office Decor Ideas with Maximalist Style

Set of three pink and green office images

Maximalist home decor transformed my simple sitting room into an office space that feels lively and functional. When my daughter was two, I returned to work full-time and decided to turn our existing formal living room into an office. Creating this dedicated office became my latest creative project. From an interior design style perspective, I knew I wanted a maximalist space. The goal was a room that felt vibrant, full of personality, and reflective of a modern preppy and traditional style, all on a budget.

Below is a before pic of the sitting room. Before this, it started with white walls in my Modern Coastal Pink and Green Sitting Room Design post.

What is Maximalism Home Decor?

Maximalism is the opposite of minimalist style. It’s about embracing abundance, personality, and layers. Maximalist interior design celebrates a mix of patterns, various colors, and layering textures. As a result, it creates a space full of life and character. For my home office, maximalism meant surrounding myself with things that make me happy. Specifically, I added vintage furniture, eclectic accessories, and plenty of my favorite pink and green accents. Below is the design scheme I made for this room. With a few swaps from our original sitting room, I was able to completely change the style and function of the space.

Unlike minimalism, maximalism encourages collecting and displaying what you love. It celebrates a mix of eras, from art deco pieces to modern finds, giving each item purpose within the room. A curated gallery wall or layered shelving can highlight personal collections in a way that feels intentional rather than crowded. The result is a space that feels personal rather than cluttered, where color and pattern tell the story.

Furniture: New, Reuse, or Move?

One of the first decisions for this space was determining which pieces to keep, which to repurpose, and what new items the space needed. Each choice balanced function and design so the room felt thoughtful and cohesive.

For new additions, a few key updates shaped the office.

  • A new pink office chair added comfort and color.
  • Gold bookshelves introduced storage along one wall.
  • A hidden walking pad and stand-up desk offer a great way to stay active without disrupting the design flow.

In terms of reuse, familiar pieces grounded the room with character.

  • The project table became a spacious desk for work and creative projects.
  • A vintage desk provided organized storage for art supplies.
  • The green stools stayed in place for when the kids join me, keeping the space relaxed and personal while tying together different styles.

Some pieces from the existing layout worked better in other rooms, so I moved them.

  • A pair of high-back upholstered chairs now fit naturally in a sitting area.
  • The dark gray marble side table adds contrast in another room.
  • The crystal lamp relocated to simplify the desk area and open space for new lighting.

Styling Bookshelves with Personality

Bookshelves are one of my favorite ways to bring personality into the room. The new gold bookshelves I added bring both style and storage, becoming natural focal points in the office. Each one holds a mix of my favorite things, including vintage frames, design books, and painted ceramic animals that add color and charm. Brass eagle bookends and a lemon topiary introduce an eclectic touch, while woven baskets below keep hand weights and yoga blocks neatly tucked away.

These bookshelves capture how maximalism encourages surrounding yourself with what you love. They add texture, function, and visual interest, reflecting the personal details that make the space feel layered and lived in. Adding a few new finds over time keeps the display evolving, which is part of what makes maximalist home decor so personal. Each shelf tells its own story, blending style and sentiment in a way that feels intentional.

Color Palette: Pink, Green, and More

The light pink and hunter green color palette sets the tone for the room. Soft pastel walls keep the space calm, while rich green accents add contrast and depth. Maximalism thrives on vibrant home decor and layered color, so I build on that base with a few bright color accents in blue and yellow. The mix feels balanced and intentional, creating a space that’s lively but never loud. The pink and green palette takes inspiration from nature, echoing the mix of blooming flowers and leafy greens. It brings an easy sense of balance that feels both fresh and timeless in the room.

Statement Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating the right atmosphere. Natural light from two windows brightens the room throughout the day, so I keep window treatments light and simple to preserve that open feel. The existing overhead white bamboo fixture provides soft illumination throughout the room and complements the maximalist look of the space.

Near the workspace, a ceramic fruit table lamp from Goodwill adds both charm and function. Its woven shade from Ballard Designs gives the lamp a tailored finish while softening the light for reading or writing. Decorative details like the blue ginger jar vases from At Home, filled with faux green hydrangeas, add color and texture that tie the lighting elements together. The result is a warm, inviting workspace that feels cohesive from morning light to evening glow.

Maximalist Wall Art with Style

Art is one of the easiest ways to express personality in a room. The art pieces in this space reflect a maximalist style that feels colorful, personal, and charming. A vintage hand-painted floral painting from Goodwill adds warmth behind my work table, and a pair of thrifted watercolor beach paintings hang above the vintage art supply desk. These finds bring a calming, coastal touch to the room. The different subject matter keeps the display interesting. Floral and coastal themes balance one another, showing how mixed artwork can still feel cohesive when tied together through color and scale. Together, they’re a fun way to add character and visual interest.

Rugs That Define the Room

The existing round woven rug I had wasn’t working with my rolling chair, so I replaced it with a cream and light green geometric rug that features different patterns for added interest. It brings both style and comfort to the room. The geometric design complements the other patterns in the room without competing with them. It helps anchor the furniture layout and adds another layer of detail that supports the overall design. The new rug enhances the maximalist look, tying the space together with texture and subtle color.

Maximalist Home Decor Style in the Details

This office shows how maximalist home decor transforms a workspace into a living space that feels expressive and inspiring. It’s not about excess. It’s about surrounding yourself with what you love and creating a room that energizes you every day. Whether you or an interior designer are planning a full maximalist home or designing a maximalist bedroom or dining room, the same idea applies. Focus on pieces that bring joy and reflect your personality to create a space that feels uniquely your own.
