When we moved into our new house, I wanted a coastal sitting room that felt calm and reflected my style. The result is a coastal living room with soft pink and green tones that is a blend of modern and comfortable touches. The room sits at the front of our home, just off the kitchen, in a space that would traditionally be a dining room.
During our home build, we added French doors to create privacy and define this room from the entryway. It started with white walls and simple trim, a blank canvas ready for color and personality. The natural light and size make it perfect for painting, reading, or quiet conversation.

Coastal Sitting Room Inspiration
The first thing I do when designing a space is gather inspirational images to guide the plan. I keep a running list on Pinterest and in personal journals to collect ideas. Each image captures the feeling I want for the room. I also flip through magazines and catalogs, cutting out images and adding them to my journals. For this sitting room, I saved a clipping of a pink living room with green coastal accents. Those colors and textures helped me imagine how the room could come together.

Design Plan
When designing this space, I focused on creating distinct areas for different activities. I wanted a table for projects and separate seating for relaxation, each anchored with its own focal point to give the room balance and purpose. Since I didn’t need much storage for what I’d be working on, I chose to forgo additional storage furniture. Defining the function of the space early made it easier to pull all the pieces together and prioritize items that really mattered.

Pink and Green Color Palette
I’ve always loved pairing pink and green, especially with soft shades that feel calm and inviting. The paint color, Benjamin Moore Melted Ice Cream, is a gentle pink that works beautifully within a neutral palette. Inspired by my reference image, I added green accents and small pops of contrast for a modern coastal look. These soft colors make the room feel light and airy while still grounded through furniture and accessories.

Selecting Modern Furniture
When we moved to this house, I wanted to use the furniture I already owned thoughtfully. It’s easy to think that refreshing a room means starting over. Perfectly styled catalogs and social media inspiration can make that idea feel true. I often felt like I was struggling to achieve the look I envisioned. Then I realized that personal style shines when a room doesn’t look like a showroom or magazine spread. Reusing furniture I already owned made the space feel personal and layered. It also kept the process practical and easier on the budget. I added a few new pieces to finish the design while maintaining a cohesive and intentional look.
Workspace: I placed our round white table at the center of the room. It once served as our kitchen table and is from Crate & Barrel, and I’ve always loved its clean, timeless shape. The only new additions were a pair of stools that double as footrests or extra seating when I’m working at the table, giving the space flexibility and function. Adding these stools was a great way to bring versatility to the workspace without crowding the area.
Seating Area: I reused two high-back chairs and a marble-top side table for this area, all pieces that fit seamlessly into the coastal style of the room. The side tables bring in a bit of contrast against the white walls and soft pink tones, helping to anchor the seating area and create a sense of balance. This setup encourages conversation or quiet reading, making it a peaceful space to spend time in.
Accessory Furniture: An X-leg stool adds a small but useful touch, acting as a versatile accent that can move easily between the seating area and workspace.

Choosing Lighting
Choosing lighting for a space is another component that balances both function and style. It’s important to consider how you will use the room when planning lighting, as well as how the lighting contributes to the overall room decor. Well-placed lighting is a great way to enhance a space’s personality and highlight key areas.
Sitting Area: A small lamp adds soft light beside the high-back chairs, creating a comfortable spot for reading or relaxing. The crystal table lamp, a long-time favorite piece, complements the seating area and brings a touch of timeless style.
Workspace: Overhead lighting keeps the workspace functional and balanced. A coastal-inspired fixture enhances the room’s modern, airy mood while maintaining a light, open feel.
Natural Light: Factoring in natural lighting is essential when planning lighting. This space has two large windows that provide plenty of daylight, and I didn’t want to block this with heavy window treatments. Choosing high-contrast black and white window treatments hung on gold curtain rods keeps the room bright while making a subtle design statement.

Selecting Decor Items
Decorative accessories are one of my favorite parts of designing a space. They add personality and warmth to a room. For this coastal sitting room, I chose accent pieces with natural materials and textures. These details complement the soft pink and green palette beautifully. Each item enhances the modern, airy vibe while adding subtle layers of interest. Together, they create a cohesive and inviting aesthetic.
Rug: I added a round jute rug to anchor the seating area. Its natural texture and warm tones tie the room together. The rug keeps the coastal style effortless and relaxed. It also grounds the round table at the room’s center, making the space feel complete.
Wall Art: Flamingo wall art adds a touch of color and whimsy to the space. Carefully chosen frames bring subtle detail without overwhelming the room. I also included two profile portraits of my kids in round frames. They add a personal and meaningful touch to the seating area.
Stems: Faux palm plants in an aqua sea glass vase bring natural texture to the space. They add a hint of greenery that reinforces the coastal theme.
Pillows: I already owned the striped throw pillows, which add comfort and style to the seating area. They coordinate perfectly with the room’s color palette. Swapping in seasonal pillows keeps the space feeling fresh throughout the year.

More Coastal Style Ideas
If modern pink and green isn’t your first choice for coastal style, there are plenty of other ways to bring a coastal feel into your living space. Thoughtful choices in accessories, furniture, and color help create cohesive coastal spaces without overwhelming the room.
Accessories: Wicker baskets, a blue tray, light wood tones, and soft blues bring texture, subtle pattern, and a sense of the sea into the space. Carefully chosen frames, vases, decorative objects, and storage containers add layers of interest, while coastal pillows provide comfort and style.
Furniture: Woven coastal furniture, any type of wood furniture, a white slipcovered sofa, or even a leather sofa can work beautifully with the right coastal accessories. Using natural fabrics and darker tones used sparingly helps maintain an airy atmosphere and a beautiful space to relax in.
Color Palette: A crisp white color palette, soft neutral colors, or shades of blue form a bright, airy backdrop. Soft blues and natural wood tones create contrast and depth, bringing balance and dimension to coastal spaces.

Final Coastal Touches
This room came together through thoughtful interior design, where function and style coexist seamlessly. By focusing on coastal design, soft colors, and carefully chosen accent pieces, the result is a beautiful space that feels inviting and personal. Small touches of coastal decor complete the look, making it bright and inspiring, and a great way to show how intentional choices can elevate a room.
