Coastal Seashell Display Box

Decorative seashells and coastal-themed decor from SLO Interiors.

A seashell box is a simple way to bring natural texture and a coastal detail into your home. I have long admired handcrafted seashell boxes at higher-end retailers and on vintage auction sites, but not the price tag that often reaches several hundred dollars. This project creates a similar look with a decorative box, an assortment of shells, and glue. The finished piece turns an everyday item into something worth displaying on a coffee table, side table, built-in, or bookshelf.

A Simple Coastal Project

One of the best things about this project is how straightforward it is to put together. The supplies are easy to find, there are only a few steps, and most of the time is spent adjusting the shells until the arrangement feels right. The finished seashell box has the detail and character of a more expensive piece without requiring a complicated process. It also adds a touch of coastal luxury without making the room feel overly themed.

What You’ll Need

Materials

  • Small decorative box
  • Assortment of seashells

Tools

  • E6000 glue

Before You Start

I used a small decorative glass box that I already had, but the same idea works with many different styles as long as the lid is flat enough to arrange the shells easily. Clean the box thoroughly, allow it to dry, and clear a work surface where you can spread out your full assortment of shells. A mix of shapes and sizes will help fill the space naturally, and separating the larger pieces from the smaller, more delicate shells makes it easier to see which ones should guide the arrangement. The project comes together in two easy steps, beginning with the placement and ending with the glue, so taking your time with the first step will make the rest of the process much easier. Natural shells vary in shape and height, which means the design does not need to follow a perfect pattern, and a little irregularity will help the finished box feel more relaxed and natural.

How to Make a Seashell Box

Step 1: Arrange Shells on the Box

Place the shells on top of the lid without using any glue. Begin with one or two larger shells, then add smaller pieces around them until the surface feels balanced without looking crowded. Turn the shells in different directions and let a few edges overlap where needed. Continue adjusting the placement until you are happy with the arrangement from several angles.

Step 2: Glue Shells in Place

Once the layout is set, remove and glue the shells one at a time. Start with the largest pieces so they anchor the design, then work outward while checking that the remaining shells still fit. Small adjustments are usually necessary because each shell sits a little differently once the glue is added. Leave the box undisturbed until the adhesive has fully cured.

Styling a Seashell Box

The finished box works well anywhere you would normally place a small decorative object. Style it with books, a lamp, or a few coastal treasures, allowing the neutral tones of the seashells to add texture without competing with the rest of the color scheme. It also creates perfect storage for jewelry, remotes, or other small everyday items you want hidden out of plain sight. The balance between decoration and function makes it an easy piece to use in every room. Seashell Box Design Variations

The same project works with wood, acrylic, mirrored, ceramic, lacquered, or metal boxes, as long as the lid provides enough room for the arrangement. If you want to change up the style of the box, use shells in the same size and color for a more uniform look, or mix colors and sizes for something more varied and collected. White seashells create a quieter finish, while a mix of colors and varieties feels more casual and collected. Shells collected during a favorite trip can turn the project into a display for tiny treasures, while purchased shells make it easier to control the palette and overall look.

The Finished Coastal Seashell Box

The finished seashell box has the character of the pieces found at higher-end retailers and auction sites, but it is much more approachable to make at home. For anyone drawn to tranquil boxes and natural coastal accents, this is a versatile addition that feels thoughtful without requiring much more than careful placement and a little glue. Its versatile design works with different box materials, shell styles, and decorating preferences, making each version feel distinct. It adds a subtle touch of luxury while still serving a practical purpose.
