Classic Christmas Decorations for the Holidays

A decorative holiday interior with Christmas ornaments and festive decor.

Classic Christmas decorations are a beautiful foundation for holiday decor, especially in a newer home with updated finishes and a more current feel. I love traditional pieces like wreaths, garlands, and trees, but prefer when the styling feels collected rather than perfectly matched. This year, I focused on refining the placement of my favorite decor items so each one had more impact throughout our home during the holiday season. Colorful accents, coastal details, and familiar Christmas greenery helped soften a traditional Christmas theme and make the house feel more personal.

Classic Christmas Pieces

For holiday decor, I focus on classic Christmas items and shapes instead of one exact style. Trees, wreaths, and garlands all have a traditional Christmas feel, whether they are made with a greenery base or a more decorative material. The main tree anchors the living room, while smaller tree collections repeat that classic shape in other areas of the house. I choose smaller trees that work with my color palette and style preferences, rather than forcing every piece to match. Coordinating garlands in various spaces help connect the holiday decor from room to room. Wreaths add another familiar shape, with enough variety in color, texture, and style to keep the decor personal.

A Colorful Entry With Classic Christmas Details

The entry off our front door is long and narrow, with everyday decor that stays in place for Christmas. I like to layer a wreath in this space, especially something colorful enough to become the focal point. This year, I used my colorful DIY ornament wreath over the mirror, made with traditional Christmas ornaments and a few that are reminiscent of vintage ornaments.

Slightly down the hall, our staircase has a wide half wall where I like to layer garland along the railing. I weave a basic faux greenery garland with a more lifelike garland to make it fuller. This year, I decorated the garland with velvet ribbons, beaded fruit, and a mix of colorful shatterproof ornaments. The wreath over the mirror and the staircase garland carry color through the front hall.

Classic Christmas Details in the Office

Adjacent to our entryway, my office sits behind a set of clear glass French doors. I hung a pair of red velvet braided wreaths on the interior side of the doors for a festive touch in the space. The red velvet adds a rich Christmas detail against the clear glass doors and pale pink walls.

I also display my DIY ornament trees in the office. They are colorful additions to the space, with a palette that reflects the colors already in the room while bringing in traditional red and green for the holidays. The trees use classic ornaments in a way that complements the rest of the office.

Traditional Christmas Decorations in the Kitchen

I like using traditional Christmas decorations in our kitchen that work with the space. My favorite trick is hanging small wreaths over the cabinet doors to create a holiday atmosphere. I wrap each wreath with wide ribbon, then secure the ribbon at the top of the cabinet with tape or a small weighted object.

I keep countertop decor to a minimum in our main kitchen area. I occasionally display one small Christmas item on the counter, while most of the decoration stays on the cabinets. The wreaths add enough Christmas detail above the main work surfaces.

Just off our kitchen, we have a small butler’s pantry where I make coffee. I always accent this space with a few Christmas decorations from my childhood, including a ceramic tree handmade by one of my grandmothers. The small collection of houses came from my other grandmother, which makes this corner feel more personal. These pieces make the butler’s pantry feel personal, even with only a few small decorations.

A Traditional Mantel in the Dining Area

This year, I wanted the mantel in our eating area to feel more traditional than it has in years past. I used the same garland approach from the staircase, pairing an evergreen garland with a more lifelike garland for volume, then adding beaded fruit, colorful ornaments, and velvet ribbon. I placed a pair of matching holiday topiaries on the shelves that flank the wall art.

Collected Christmas Decor in the Living Room

I repeat my favorite beaded fruit garland in the living room under our TV. I love the rich mix of wired ribbon, classic fruit, and colorful ornaments. The garland repeats the fruit, ribbon, and ornament details used in other parts of the house, adding another festive atmosphere to the room.

Beyond the TV area, I style a side table with a collection of red and green trees. I also use a thrifted beaded fruit wreath in this space. I love Christmas wreaths, but prefer slightly nontraditional options for focal points with more color and interest.

Our main Christmas tree is also in the living room. I do not do a themed tree, because ours is loaded with ornaments from my childhood, handmade ornaments from my kids, and pieces we have added over time. Getting out the ornaments and putting them on the tree is one of my kids’ favorite holiday activities because they love hearing the stories around each one.

Decor in the Powder Room

I like to bring a small touch of holiday cheer into our powder room. This year, I lined up a set of three red and white candy cane stripe trees on the windowsill. They are the perfect accent for the small window because they add Christmas color in one contained spot.

Simple Christmas Decor in the Kids’ Rooms

I keep Christmas decor in the kids’ rooms very simple. I string a faux garland wrapped with indoor lights and velvet ribbon over each headboard. They love the glow it gives off in the evenings.

Details in the Master Bedroom

In our primary bedroom, I take the same approach as the kids’ rooms with a simple lit garland wrapped in ribbon over the headboard. I set it on a timer so I do not have to adjust it every night. It adds a soft Christmas detail above the bed.

I also place a silver tree in a blue and white pot, then add red bows and Shiny Brite ornaments. I love how it feels classic and vintage at the same time. The red bows and ornaments give it a festive look with a touch of nostalgia.

Classic Christmas Decorations That Blend Color and Nostalgia

Classic Christmas decorations work best in our home when traditional pieces are mixed with color, coastal details, and ornaments collected over time. Those details carry through the main living spaces, bedrooms, and smaller corners of the house. During holiday celebrations, the mix of greenery, colorful accents, and nostalgic pieces brings a warm welcome to the house. The result is holiday decor with timeless charm, color, and personal history.
