Our primary bedroom in our previous home was quite formal. In this house, I wanted a more casual look and feel, but still planned to reuse a lot of our existing furniture. This blue bedroom design with coral accents makes that possible, blending familiar pieces with new blue bedroom ideas to create a peaceful retreat.
Design Inspiration
For this room, I started with a strong inspirational image I found on Pinterest. What drew me to this image was the bright colors. I love the mix of blue and coral. They’re fun, but not too young-looking and they add just enough energy to the space. The bold patterns on the bed and simple accessories on the nightstand create a perfect balance.
Similar to the inspiration image, our room will have blue accents rather than blue walls. Our space gets plenty of natural light. Our white walls create a crisp, balanced backdrop for the design. By focusing on what draws my attention in an inspirational image, whether it’s a color combination, a layout idea or even something small like a piece of artwork, it makes it easier to adapt the inspiration to my own home rather than trying to copy a space exactly as it’s shown.

Design Plan
Once I had my inspiration image in hand, I created the design plan below. Finding a balance between copying the room exactly as shown and mixing new pieces with furniture I already owned became the goal. The final result was never meant to match the inspiration image perfectly, but to interpret it in a way that worked for our home. I wanted to keep the cool tones from the inspirational image, though softer accents felt better with what I already owned. Ultimately, I decided on a lighter blue for the main color and a softer coral became the ideal choice for the accent color.

Blue and Coral Bedroom Color Palette
This blue bedroom design with coral accents started with the basic color scheme of blue and coral. Blue can be both energizing and calming, with bright blue adding vibrancy and soft blues bringing a sense of ease. In this space, the range of tones makes blue feel almost like a neutral color because it works so seamlessly with other shades. Like my Modern Coastal Pink and Green Sitting Room Design that features pink and green in the space, blue and coral are complementary colors to each other on the color wheel, which always makes for an impactful design.

Mixing Old and New Furniture
Designing this room was a balance of mixing new finds with favorite existing furniture. Deciding what to reuse came down to both comfort and sentiment. Our loveseat has been with us through multiple homes, so it felt natural to make it work again. On the other hand, the new blue bed helped anchor the palette and gave the room a sense of freshness.
Mixing old and new pieces adds character and keeps a space from feeling overly designed. If you’re creating your own version of this look, think about which furniture pieces have meaning and which could be updated to complement your new color scheme. I wanted to reuse what still worked, update what didn’t, and create a cohesive look with color that tied everything together.
Several existing furniture pieces from our previous primary bedroom fit beautifully into this space:
- Dark wood nightstands: These were from a local furniture store near our last home. Many different wood finishes would look great with this color palette.
- Dark gray loveseat: This is a custom upholstered piece I had made over a decade ago and it’s still in great shape.
- Silver side table: This little side table is from Home Goods. It has moved to many different spaces in our home.
A few new furniture additions were made to our room to complete the updated design:
- Light blue fabric bed frame: I love the shape of this piece and the blue sets the tone for the entire room.
- Upholstered fringe ottomans: These add texture, balance to the layout and are a great place to kick your feet up on.

Selecting Lighting
When planning lighting, it’s important to think about how each part of the room will be used so it can be lit appropriately. This room gets beautiful natural daylight, which highlights the soft colors and textures. In the evenings, I rely on low, warm light to create a relaxed atmosphere. The lighting plan includes two silver lamps from our previous home for reading, a wood-beaded overhead chandelier, and a thin black floor lamp near the dark gray loveseat for task lighting.
Blue and Coral Bedroom Linens
The linens in this room add both visual detail and comfort, giving the space a finished and inviting look. I tend to prefer simple lines and geometric shapes, so that’s what I stuck with, although it would be easy to introduce a floral or organic pattern later if I wanted to change the look. The bed linens in this room are from a mix of places. The gray and white stripe Euro shams are from Pottery Barn. The white bedding sheets on the bed are from Lands End. The coral shams are from Goodwill. The navy blue stripe pillow is from HomeGoods, and the striped quilt is from Target.
Across from the bed is the dark gray loveseat. I have two light blue stripe throw pillows and one pillow with a floral and bird motif. All pillow covers are from Etsy. The coral blanket is a Matouk throw. This space only gets occasional use. Either a quick spot to rest at the end of the day or a spot for the occasional child to sleep on.

Blue and Coral Bedroom Design Decor
I wanted the artwork and accessories in this space to reflect the same balance of color and structure found in the inspirational image. I kept décor to a minimum in this room, with the exception of art on the bedroom walls. Our kids are still very young, and extra items tend to turn into clutter quickly. The beach wall art is from HomeGoods, and the three sailboat prints above our bed are from Goodwill. The faux fiddle leaf fig in the woven basket add a nice touch of greenery. I love how the mix of beach scenes, nautical prints, and greenery adds quiet personality to the space.

On the opposite wall, we have a large leaning mirror to the side of the bed that serves as a focal point and balances the layout. Its scale almost gives the effect of an accent wall, and the beveled edge on it adds just enough detail. The mirror was a challenge to move, but I’m glad we did it because it fits this room perfectly. Even though the décor is minimal in the space, each piece feels intentional. It’s proof that you don’t need many decorative items to make a space feel complete; just a few that you love.

More Ideas for Decorating with Blue
There are endless ways to bring blue into a bedroom, whether through blue paint, layered blue bedding, or carefully chosen paint colors that define the mood of the space. Lighter shades of sky blue work beautifully in both smaller bedrooms or a large room, adding color without feeling overwhelming. Pairing blue with other accent colors such as mint green or ivory creates a calm, balanced look that still feels fresh.
To build on the blue foundation, you can incorporate nautical elements or add ocean-themed items for a subtle coastal influence. Gold accents, wooden flooring, and natural materials like linen or rattan bring texture and warmth to the palette.
A Finished Look
Our blue bedroom design with coral accents feels calm and collected. I reflects our style along with the pieces we’ve loved over time. The mix of soft color, natural light, and simple patterns gives the space a relaxed, coastal feel. I’ve learned that even small adjustments, like changing colors or rethinking balance, can make a familiar space feel new again. It’s comfortable, personal, and exactly the kind of room I look forward to ending each day in.
