Halloween Mantel with Simple Spiders

Black bug wall decals on white fireplace and wall art in modern home decor.

Halloween mantel decor is one of my favorite ways to bring the season into our home without changing the overall look of our space. I love the contrast in this room, and I wanted to do something that felt fun and easy for the kids while still working with the decor we already had in place. These affordable DIY spiders, layered over existing pieces with a few simple pumpkin accents, created a high-impact focal point without requiring much time or money. It is a great way to add a little spooky season style while keeping your existing home decor instact.

A Simple Halloween Project

This project comes together with simple supplies and does not require a major decorating commitment. If you like to maintain your existing style while still bringing in a little Halloween theme, this kind of high-contrast mantel moment works especially well. The felt spiders stand out against the lighter background, which gives the fireplace mantel a strong focal point without making the entire space feel overdone. It is also the kind of detail that kids love, which makes it that much more fun to bring out during the fall season.

What you’ll Need

Materials

  • Sheets of black felt (3-5)
  • Black pipe cleaners
  • Googly eyes
  • Cotton balls

Tools

  • A cup or something circular to trace
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors for the felt and pipe cleaners

Before you Start

Before making the spiders, clear a work area where you can lay all of your felt sheets out. I prefer to approach this project assembly-line style, finishing one step for all of the spiders before moving on to the next. This keeps the process faster and more organized, especially when working with hot glue and smaller pieces.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Trace the Felt Circles

Take your cup and trace as many circles as possible onto each sheet of black felt. You will need two circles for every spider, so it helps to make all of them first and then pair them up as you go. Once the circles are traced, cut them out and set each pair aside.

Step 2: Cut the Pipe Cleaners

Each spider needs eight legs, and each leg should be about two inches long. Cut your black pipe cleaners until you have enough pieces for all of the spiders you plan to make. It helps to line them up in groups of eight so the next step moves more quickly.

Step 3: Attach the Legs

Take one felt circle and attach eight legs with a small dab of hot glue, placing four on each side. Keep them concentrated along the sides of the circle and leave space at the front for the googly eyes. You will also want to leave a little room at the back so the shape closes neatly when you add the second felt circle. I worked through each spider one by one and lined them up as they were completed.

Step 4: Assemble the Spider Body

Place one cotton ball in the center of each spider body you just created. Then take the second felt circle and run a ring of hot glue around the edges before pressing it on top to close the spider. The cotton ball gives the body a little shape, which makes the spiders feel fuller and more finished.

Step 5: Attach the Googly Eyes

Finish each spider by gluing on two googly eyes in the open space you left at the front. This is the step that gives them personality and makes the project feel a little more playful. Once the eyes are attached, the spiders are ready to style. They have just enough character to feel festive without competing with the rest of the seasonal decor.

Styling Ideas for Your Mantel

These spiders can be displayed on a wall, across cabinets, or on a mantel. I used a removable tape for a temporary hold without any damaged. FrogTape is my favorite for this as it sticks better than basic blue painters tape. These spiders are great for a Halloween party setup, on a console table in a front entryway, or layered into family room styling with a mix of pumpkins nearby. The classic black makes them easy to work into a range of spaces and color palettes.

DIY Spider Tips

This project is easy to customize if you want to experiment with different sizes, colors, or even a different creature. I tried styling these with a simple bat garland, a few faux pumpkins and some real pumpkins, but ultimately scaled it back because I preferred the cleaner mantel moment. Keeping the design simple made the final look more striking and let the spooky elements stand out without taking over the whole space.

The Finished Halloween Mantel

The finished look has a fun mix of textures, with felt spiders layered alongside ceramic ghosts and stacked pumpkin candlesticks. I love the contrast of the spiders against the white walls and bright blue artwork. It feels graphic, playful, and still pulled together, which is exactly what I wanted for our Halloween mantel this year. This project ended up being one of the easiest ways to make the space feel ready for the season. The DIY spiders were fun for the kids, affordable to make, and easy to layer over the decor already in place. With just a few pumpkin accents and a little tape, the mantel became a bold focal point for spooky season. It is a simple, high-impact way to celebrate Halloween without spending a lot of time or money.
