Coastal Dining Room Decor Ideas

Step into our modern coastal dining room. Crisp white walls and a neutral palette create a light, relaxed backdrop, while coastal elements and bold color add interest throughout the space. This room shows that style and family life can coexist beautifully, creating a place that feels both polished and full of everyday connection.

Dining Room Location

Admittedly, our dining room was a bit of an afterthought for me after spending so much time personalizing our builder-grade kitchen. We only have one dining area in this house, along with a breakfast counter that seats four, so this space gets a ton of use. Because the dining room sits right beside the kitchen, I wanted a similar look and feel across the two spaces to keep everything cohesive. We don’t host formal dinners, so the space is used most often for weeknight meals, board games, or kids’ craft projects that need extra room. Still, I love setting a beautiful table for holidays like Christmas and Easter. My goal was a space that feels coastal, modern, and clean without losing warmth or personality.

To keep a consistent look between the kitchen and dining room, I carried the gold accents from the kitchen into this space for a sense of flow. The gold mirror on the wall helped tie the rooms together at first, but I ultimately didn’t love the reflection over the table, so I ended up replacing it with coastal-style art instead. I still have the gold wall shelves with plants, which bring warmth and balance to the room. A simple color scheme of crisp whites, soft neutrals, and touches of gold keeps the room feeling light and balanced. The dark wood table with light chairs and the white fireplace paired with dark metal chandeliers create contrast that feels intentional and polished.

Furniture for The Dining Room

All of the furniture in this space is new, with the exception of the upholstered wingback chairs at the head of the table. We had them in our last house, and they still had plenty of life left in them, so I wanted to make sure they had a space in this house. The dark walnut dining table is from Overstock, and the cane-back dining room chairs are from American Signature Furniture. The furnishings blend coastal style and nautical elements through crisp lines, natural textures, and warm wood tones. I love the contrast between the dark wood tones of the table and the lighter finish of the chairs, it makes the room feel bright while grounded. The woven back of the chairs is nice blend of natural materials and a classic coastal touch.

An element we intentionally added to this space was an electric fireplace. After moving South from a Northern state, it just felt wrong not to have a mantel to hang Christmas stockings on. It’s also nice to have for warming the kitchen floor on the handful of cold days we get each year. We have other elements near this space that accentuate the coastal look and feel, including woven nautical bar stools, aqua backsplash tile, and shades of blue throughout the family room. These features connect the spaces visually, keeping the overall look cohesive and relaxed.

Choosing Lighting and Wall Art

I chose two matching chandeliers to hang above the dining table. The light fixtures are from Home Depot and were originally a more rustic, weathered metallic finish. I spray-painted the metal black for a cleaner, more modern look. Each crystal had to be hung individually, which definitely took some patience!

As I mentioned earlier, I first tried a round gold-framed mirror above the fireplace but eventually swapped it for wall art. I found an overhead photograph of two kayakers in the ocean at HomeGoods and instantly loved it. My husband and I tried kayaking on our honeymoon, and it went terribly, but we still laugh about it to this day. I love that this piece brings back that memory every time I see it.

Everyday Table Setting

I like to keep the table setting simple for everyday use in this space. The coastal surround remains, but I make small tweaks to the tablescape to reflect the season or a special occasion. Most days, I use a basic runner, woven placemats, and a small centerpiece. The runner in the photo below is a thrift shop find, the placemats are from Crate & Barrel, and the tulipiere centerpiece is from Wayfair. The white faux tulips are from Amazon, and they add a fresh, timeless touch to the table.

Decor and Accessories

There isn’t much extra space in our dining room for decor, but the wall between the kitchen and dining room felt like the perfect place for an accent piece. The gold woven side table was a Goodwill find, and I couldn’t believe my luck. It was originally silver and black, but a few coats of gold spray paint transformed it. I usually keep a few plants on it, using containers I’ve picked up from Goodwill and other favorite local shops.

Beyond the plant stand, two more plants sit on small gold wall shelves. Both the shelves and the white pedestal containers came from a thrift shop, adding just the right amount of charm to frame the wall art.

Bring Coastal Style Home

This room has become one of my favorite spots in the house, offering an elegant coastal dining atmosphere that feels both relaxed and refined. The mix of bright natural light and walls, subtle coastal details, and contrasting décor makes it a space that feels welcoming and easy to enjoy every day.

You can bring coastal dining décor into your home through natural materials and relaxed styling, combining coastal-style furnishings, slipcovered seating, and a range of coastal dining tables that mix texture, warmth, and timeless appeal. I hope it inspires you to create your own coastal space with neutral color palettes that bring the look to life.
